GIF (Graphics Interchange Format) is a bitmap
image format for pictures with distinct colours. There’s a widespread usage
on the World Wide Web.
The weak point of GIF format is a limitation of
recording the files in TRUECOLOUR . The competing PNG format is deprived of
this limitation. It was created for the reason that GIF format had been
patented by UNISYS. ( introduced on worldwide scale on the 7th of July 2004)
and IBM (The latest expiration date of the GIF-related patents will be on
the 11th of August 2006 )
The files in GIF format can contain several images, which makes it possible
to create animated pictures. (which are often used on the World Wide Web).
